Halo 4 Map Walkthroughs with 343i

October 23, 2012 User blog:JAlbor

Hey everyone! 343 Industries recently released a load of developer walkthroughs of upcoming Halo 4 Multplayer Maps. This blog post collects them all in one handy place for your enjoyment!
I have already embedded the released videos on their respective pages, but thought I would make a blog post with them as well since I think they are awesome and don't think you should miss them. You can find them all below for your viewing convenience.

Also, are you most looking forward to? (I'm into Complex.)

H4: Loadouts

To continue from the last post, here are details about Loadouts:

You should customize at least one Loadout so that you have your maximum competitive edge, regardless of what map and game type you go into.

 Primary Weapon

Weapon Cost Rank Notes
DMR 0 SP SR-1 Single shot DMR like Halo: Reach, ideal for long range. 5 shots to kill, min kill time 1.6 sec.
Assault Rifle 1 SP SR-2 Fully auto AR, improved for H4 in terms of kill efficiency, ideal for short range
Battle Rifle 1 SP SR-2 3-shot burst BR like Halo 3, ideal for medium range. 5 shots to kill, min kill time 1.6 sec. May be slightly easier to get headshots than single-shot weapons.
Storm Rifle 2 SP SR-5 Fully auto AR, replaces Plasma Rifle, ideal for short range. Can not be reloaded.
Covenant Carbine 2 SP SR-5 Single shot Carbine like in past games, ideal for medium range. 7 shots to kill, min kill time 1.6 sec (fires faster than BR or DMR).
Suppressor 2 SP SR-22 Fully auto AR, seems to replace Brute Plasma Rifle, ideal for short range. Can be reloaded.
LightRifle 2 SP SR-22 Single shot rifle, Promethean DMR equivalent, ideal for long range. 4-5 shots to kill, min kill time 1.3-1.8 sec.

Secondary Weapon
Weapon Cost Rank Notes
Magnum 0 SP SR-1 Single-shot, scoped pistol with long effective range like in Halo 1.
Plasma Pistol 2 SP SR-8 Can be overcharged for EMP n00b combo, seems to be upgrade for H4 in terms if single shot damage.
Boltshot 2 SP SR-18 Has both single shot and overcharge capability, unclear yet of overcharge has any special effects like plasma EMP.

Grenades
Grenade Cost Rank Notes
Frag Grenade 0 SP SR-1 Same frags as always, don't know if they have EMP effect like in Halo: Reach.
Plasma Grenade 2 SP SR-8 Same stickies as always.
Pulse Grenade 2 SP SR-18 Promethean grenade that creates a bright orange sphere called an attenuation field. This field is super obvious and pretty easy for infantry to avoid, but it slows vehicles, and drains both shields and health.
Ability
Ability Cost Rank Notes
Promethean Vision 2 SP SR-1 Gives a "Predator" effect allowing you to see through walls.
Thruster Pack 2 SP SR-1 Gives a short boost of speed, independent of leg movement. Much shorter burst than Sprint, but unlike Sprint, can be used in the air
Hologram 3 SP SR-6 Sends out a virtual hologram, like from Halo: Reach
Jet Pack 3 SP SR-6 Jet pack like from Halo: Reach
Hardlight Shield 3 SP SR-10 Portable, see-through Riot Shield, but can not shoot while using it. Unlike Armor Lock, is vulnerable at the sides and back, and can be punched through.
Active Camouflage 3 SP SR-10 Temporary invisibility, does not have as extreme Radar Noise as in Halo: Reach. Like before is affected by shooting and moving quickly.
Autosentry 3 SP SR-16 Deployable automated turret.
Regeneration Field 3 SP SR-16 Field affect that heals nearby Spartans
Tactical Package
Package Cost Rank Notes
Mobility 1 SP SR-7 Unlimited Sprint
Shielding 1 SP SR-7 Improves shield recharge rate
Resupply 1 SP SR-14 Allows recovering grenades from dead players
AA Efficiency 1 SP SR-14 Improves Armor Ability recharge rate
Grenadier 1 SP SR-24 Increases grenade carrying capacity
Firepower 1 SP SR-24 Allows configuring Loadouts with a primary weapon in the secondary weapon slot
Fast Track Pioneer PR-10 Increases the amount of XP earned per match.
Requisition TrackerTK-10 Allows two different sets of options for equipment rewarded through ordnance drops.
Wheelman OperatorOP-10 Improves durability of vehicles, as well as decreasing downtime when affected by EMP discharges.
Support Upgrade
Ability Cost Rank Notes
Dexterity 1 SP SR-12 Faster reload and weapon switch time
Ammo 1 SP SR-12 Spawn with extra clip
Sensor 1 SP SR-20 Longer range radar
Awareness 1 SP SR-20 Retain radar when scoped
Explosives 1 SP SR-26 Increases grenade damage to others, reduces grenade damage to self
Ordnance Priority 1 SP SR-26 More Ordnance Drops
Drop Recon EngineerEN-10Allows users to know the time and place of ordnance deployments prior to the drops actually occurring
GunnerPathfinderPT-10Improves upon elements of heavy weapon specialists, such as increasing the amount of time a mounted weapon takes to overheat during sustained fire or improving the general speed and mobility while carrying a detached turret.
NemesisStalkerSK-10Allows user to hone-in on the last enemy who killed them
StabilityRogueRG-10Increases aiming stability while taking incoming fire
StealthWetworkWK-10Allows users to move silently during combat, lowers their visibility profile on certain VISR enhancements (like Promethean Vision), and increases their ability to kill enemies from behind.

H4: XP, SP, SR, Rank, Loadouts - What you need to know

There are some significant changes to the Halo 4 multi-player system, the most obvious one that affects your competitive (dis)advantage are custom loadouts.  If you don't read any further than this first paragraph, take this away: Go into the Spartan Hub (hit Start) and customize your Loadout options to add a Tactical Package and a Support Upgrade.  That said, here's the rest of the nitty gritty that you may care about.

As you play in War Games and Spartan Ops, you'll see that you get points for things and you get "promotions" on a regular cadence.  Currently, everybody in the world has a level that looks like SRxx where xx is a number from 1-50.  You'll also notice that Loadouts are more complicated in Halo 4, with randomized Ordnance Drops that you can individually call down.  What does it all mean?  What do you need to do?  Here is the key terminology:
  • Experience Points (XP): Like in every game since Halo 2, you get experience points as you play.  You get different amounts based on game type and your individual performance.  You only gain XP from Infinity Gametypes (War Games, Spartan Ops), *not* from Campaign.  XP is what levels up your Service Rank, or SRxx number.
  • Spartan Points (SP): You probably won't even notice that you have these unless you poke around in the Spartan Hub to customize your Spartan.  These are earned as you level up and are spent on Loadout options.  As far as I can tell, Armor and Emblem options are unlocked by levels or accomplishments, but don't cost any SP.
  • Spartan Rank (SR): This is a number from 1-50 that represents how many XP you have earned, and roughly replaces the Halo: Reach ranks of Captain, Lieutenant, Inheritor, etc.  Doesn't really have any tie to "skill", is most representative of how much somebody has played Infinity game types.  You must reach SR50 before you can choose a Specialization.
  • Skill Rank (?): Starting early next year, players will start seeing a skill rank based on how "good" the are.  This is similar to the per-playlist rankings from Halo 3, or the Battle Proficiency Rating from Halo: Reach.  When it appears, it will be the best indicator of how "good" a player is in a particular playlist.
There's really not much you're going to do with XP and Skill Ranks don't show up until next year.  Nobody is close to SR50, so I'll blog about Specializations later.  What you care about NOW, is SP and Loadouts.

Tips and Requirements

Most Important: You must have at least 8GB of hard drive space to play Halo 4 multiplayer.  The second disc in your package contains all the content for War Games and Spartan Ops, and must be installed to the hard drive.  You will not be able to play clan night tonight until you install disc 2.  Disc 1, as far as I can tell, is optional.  Insert disc 2 and choose the option to Play Halo 4.  When it launches, it will give you the option to install.

Very Important: Make sure you get into the Xbox Live Chat party, so that we can talk you through any connectivity problems you may have, independent of the game chat.

[11/7/12 Update]: Disc 2 apparently only requires 4 GB of space to install, can go on your hard drive or a compatible flash drive.

Clan night tonight. 8pm PT. Halo 4.

Early clan night to celebrate the launch of Halo 4.  Master Chief is back.  w00t!

H4: Specializations Part 2

We've discussed Armor Specializations before, but here's my quick cut:

  • Wetworks: If you love assassinations and creeping around. (FragginURdoodz, TimMAY1023)
  • Pioneer: If you want to level up as fast as possible. (CoolerSopranos2, UnsavorySamurai)
  • Engineer: If you want to help the team coordinate special ordinance drops. (Beer4Porter)
  • Tracker: If you love special weapons. (FishBone10, Masher 24)
  • Rogue: If you spend a lot of time scoped in (Sniper, DMR, BR). (gtdroptop, Octurian Poon)
  • Stalker: If you get fixated on killing one person. (darknorpo, QuelBelle)
  • Pathfinder: If you're always in the gunner seat (OmniscientDeath, MEAN MR MONKEY)
  • Operator: If you're always driving (BeerMonkeee, Mean Mrs Monkey)
Picking your Specialization is important because you can't change it until you've fully leveled it up.  There are 8 choices in total, with Pioneer and Wetwork being available to all players at launch.  Purchasing the Halo 4 Limited Edition gets you access to all 8 right away.  Those who pre-order and play by November 20, will get all 8 quicker as well, but probably not until 11/20 (about 2 weeks after launch).

Idle Hands...

Some people seriously have WAY too much time on their hands.

Double XP

As previously noted, specially marked Mountain Dew and Doritos products will have codes that unlock double XP in War Games matches.  Be sure to head over to Dew XP so that you're all set to enter codes and get lots of XP!

Halo 4 Interactive Guide

The kind folks at Waypoint have put together a comprehensive interactive guide that details everything about Halo 4.  Covers vehicles, story, enemies, basics, War Games, weapons and armor.  Don't want to feel like a n00b because you're the last one still wearing Recruit Armor?  Read up.

Forward Unto Dawn

Available on YouTube, and on Halo Waypoint, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn is a live-action digital series that takes fans back to the terrifying beginning of the Human/Covenant war, when the Master Chief inspired a young cadet who would eventually become a leader aboard the UNSC’s greatest vessel: the UNSC Infinity. Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn tells a story leading into the events of Halo 4.

I just watched all five episodes and it's definitely worth your time.  They're about 15 minutes each, and surprisingly well produced.  I recommend watching them via Halo Waypoint on your Xbox 360 so that you can experience them in 1080p surround sound.  Short of that, you can watch them online at Waypoint.

After you're done watching that, this will tell you everything you want to know about Kelly-087.

Halo 4 Tips: Improving Your Play

Reposted from primagames.  Some interesting notes about being unable to drop the flag, and calling down ordinance while indoors.

Halo 4 Tips: Improving Your Play11/01/12

No help when you’ve got the flag? Don’t be afraid to defend yourself. Further improve your multiplayer experience in War Games with these additional tactics and tips straight from the Major League Gaming Pros!

1. Jumping:
This is very important when you’re entering fights or disengaging from them. Use rocks, crates, and other scenery to reach higher ground. This can help in all types of objective games to cut off routes, complete shortcuts, or run in a flag faster so you can score.

2. Capturing the Flag:
If you’re holding power weapons and you’re by the enemy flag, then it is better to provide supporting fire, guard the flag, and let a teammate without such a great weapon run with the flag. You can’t drop the flag once you walk over it, so having rockets or a sniper rifle is useless. Instead, it’s simply smarter to slay and chaperone a teammate once they take the flag.

3. Oddball: If you’re in trouble during Oddball matches, and you know you’re about to be taken down while holding the ball, look out for any teammates near your position and throw them the ball. It is much better to keep it out of the other team’s hands.

4. King of the Hill:
It is wise to sometimes simply skip a hill if it will be changing soon and set up for the next one, or you may risk rushing aimlessly to a hill that’s too well defended and dying over and over again.

Try to control a point that’s close to where the next hill moves to, and set up there. Now when the hill moves, you’re in the location already and your opposition is likely to be farther away at the previous hill’s position and also in a weakened state. This allows you to accrue time easily and relatively safely.

When playing properly on a team, there should be only one player in the hill so the remaining teammates can cover the other angles to help keep the hill dweller alive. The only time two teammates should be on a hill is toward the end of a game when you need to keep the hill at all costs for the points. So, if one teammate dies in the hill, there’s a second to keep the time continuous.

5. Rushing: Never try to randomly run flags or rush an objective by charging in without help from your teammates.

6. Ordnance Discretion:

When calling in Ordnance Drops it’s important to remember a few things. First, don’t always call in a drop as soon as you get one. Instead, wait for your current provisions to run dry, especially if they’re doing the trick (which they likely are, as you just got an option for a drop!) Second, call in drops inside enclosed areas. If you do it in the open, the drop will be deployed from above the map and will be loud and noticeable. Instead, head to an interior or a location with an overhang and the ordnance will discretely materialize instead of dropping. And finally, don’t always select a power weapon which is often a player’s first reaction. If you’ve got a sweet weapon, selecting a power-up can sometimes make it even sweeter. There’s nothing quite like using a SAW to cut down a handful of enemies only to be rewarded by an Overshield, allowing you to cut down the same enemies all over again almost immediately after.

Halo 4 Double XP

Halo 4 double XP unlocked with Dew, Doritos purchases

Eddie Makuch
By Eddie Makuch, News Editor
Gamers who pick up Game Fuel soft drink and specially marked bags of chips can earn double experience in Microsoft's new shooter.
Halo fans hoping to level up their soldiers more expeditiously in November's Halo 4 can pick up Mountain Dew and Doritos products to earn double experience points, parent company PepsiCo announced today.
Beginning October 15, players who purchase Mountain Dew's special Game Fuel soft drink (at right) and specially marked Doritos products can begin entering codes through the promotion's website.
More information on the promotion can be found at the official website. Halo 4 launches worldwide on November 6 exclusively for the Xbox 360. It is a direct sequel to 2007's Halo 3, and is the first numbered entry in the series developed at 343 Industries.
[CORRECTION] An earlier version of this story indicated gamers could customize their weapon loadouts through the promotion's website. In fact, players can only customize their arsenals through the Xbox 360 itself. GameSpot regrets the error

Halo 4 Review (Spoiler Alert)

Submitted by OD, reposted from the Inquirer:

Halo 4 hands-on review

An early peek at the blastastic next installment of the iconic first person shooter series
Wed Sep 26 2012, 18:33

MICROSOFT HAS UNLEASHED the press on its eagerly anticipated first person shooter Halo 4, giving us go at two of the game's levels and full rein with its multiplayer features.
On hand at the scene, The INQUIRER blasted, clawed, drove and punched its way through the levels on show and we have to say that we're impressed.
Playing the game, we instantly felt at home, with an overarching sense of familiarity taking hold of us the moment we heard Master Chief and Cortana speak. Listening to the two characters' conversation and from what we've seen, 343 Studios has done a masterful job of recapturing the characters' tit for tat dialogue.
This sense of familiarity carried on to the game's mission format. Like its predecessors Halo 4's single player campaign is split into a number of missions, which are themselves each split into several checkpoints. In Halo 4 as in Halo 1, Halo 2 and Halo 3, Cortana acts as your guide, updating and instructing you on what action you need to take at any given time.
Halo 4 Master Chief
Starting with the game's opening level, Dawn, we saw Master Chief awaken to find a ship infested with Covenant soldiers. 343 Studios claims the level was intentionally designed to be reminiscent of the original Halo's opening level, and having played, we have to admit that it really did give us a sense of nostalgia, with the dark metal corridors, flashing blue control panels and industrial pipes lining its walls all being unquestionably Halo.
In Dawn, we found ourselves being pushed forward further into the Covenant infested spaceship to find out why humanity hadn't responded to Master Chief's distress call. This saw us traverse through a number of dark corridors and docking bays, fighting past the familiar Grunts and Drones to get to the ship's command centre, all of which felt quite familiar and in keeping with the previous games.
It was only later into the level that we began to see just how much 343 Studios has added to the series. Chief among the gameplay additions are quicktime events. Akin to mini games, quicktime events are gameplay sequences that require you to follow custom onscreen commands within a set time period. In our hands-on demo, midway through Dawn we were tasked to help Master Chief claw his way through an access shaft while dodging debris.

Moving to play the second demo level, Forerunner, it truly dawned on us just how much 343 Studios has added. Set on an alien world full of jagged rock formations and towering futuristic alien architecture, we were flabbergasted at how good Halo 4's graphics are. The game looks simply amazing, featuring high definition textures and flawless animations that we would have thought too demanding for the Xbox and its now ancient processor to deal with.
Forerunner's map was far more open than the claustrophobic corridors of Dawn and housed a number of new weapons and enemies. This level gave us an opening introduction to the Forerunners, a lost race of techno-demigods responsible for creating the galaxy destroying Halo weapons. Here we were confronted with the Knight, Crawler and Watcher Forerunners.
Halo 4 forerunner
Knights are large creatures made of a mix of steel and hologram that fall into the same class as the Covenant Elite but with the added ability to teleport around the battlefield. Crawlers are a race of dog-like creatures with big canine teeth that swarm across walls and flat surfaces to attack you in packs. Watchers are flying drones that hover around the battlefield healing and shielding their allies.
Playing this second level we found fighting the Forerunner enemies far harder than we expected, with each class behaving differently than any enemy we've ever encountered in a Halo game, thus forcing us to adapt our playing style and fighting tactics while engaging them.
The Forerunner level also adds a number of new weapons to the series. The coolest of these were the Light gun, Boltshot and Suppressor, which equate to variations on the classic Battle Rifle, Shotgun and SMG. The weapons are interesting due to the fact that they have both primary and secondary firing modes. The Light Rifle for example lets you fire three shots from the hip, or one more powerful shot zooming in. The addition of the different firing modes made using the weapons require a lot more thought, forcing us to plan which mode was best suited to the task at hand before entering a firefight.
As well as its single player additions, 343 Studios also tweaked Halo 4's multiplayer mode, updating it to give the player far more control over their Spartan character. Halo 4 features a level system similar to the one seen in Halo Reach, rewarding players with Experience after every multiplayer map, which in turn allows them to unlock new armour variants and upgrades.
However, for Halo 4 343 Studios has vastly increased the number of customisation options, giving players the ability to customise their weapon and item loadouts as well as their Spartan's appearance. Creating a loadout we were able to choose our primary and secondary weapons, grenade type, armour ability, tactical package and support upgrade.
New additions to the series, tactical package and support upgrades are variations that grant specific perks like increased speed or health to your character. Using the fully levelled Spartan used in the demo, were amazed at the number of armour variants and weapons on offer.
Outside of Halo 4's core Dominion, Capture the Flag, Regicide, Infinity Slayer and Flood multiplayer modes, 343 Studios has added a cooperative Spartan Ops mode. The mode is set to be released in weekly instalments, each of which will come bundled with a CG webisode that lays out the mission's backstory. During the demo we got to try out the Land Grab and Sniper Alley Spartan Ops. Both the missions featured run and gun gameplay that was similar to Halo 4's main campaign.
Halo 4 is set for release on 6 November. Having played through the opening sections of Halo 4, we have to say that we're really impressed. From what we've seen 343 Studios has done an excellent job, adding a host of new features to the Halo series while faithfully retaining the character and feel of its predecessors. Here's hoping that we'll be equally impressed with the full game.
Check back with The INQUIRER later for a full review of Halo 4. µ

Halo 4 Armor Classes (Specializations)

Halo 4 Specializations

Halo 4 Specializations

The UNSC Infinity, the largest starship in the UNSC fleet, is your gateway to the Infinity Multiplayer experience in Halo 4 and serves as the center of your Spartan career. Here you will build your custom Spartan-IV super-soldier, and progress your multiplayer career across both Spartan Ops and the multitude of competitive War Games modes.

Halo 4 has fifty levels. Once you have advanced through the standard fifty levels, you will get the option to enlist in a Specialization. You can choose the order in which you tackle unlocked Specializations. However once you select one, you must advance through it completely before enlisting in a separate Specialization.

Specializations allow you to enlist in specific rank paths. These paths are composed of ten levels each. As you level up through these dedicated paths, you will unlock armor sets, emblems, visor colors, weapon and armor skins, and armor mods – which provide even more options to customize your Spartan-IV to fit your preferred role on the battlefield.

These armor mods will work exactly like all other tactical and support mods in the game. They are not tied to specific armor for each Specialization, so you don’t have to wear the armor to use that particular mod. They enhance a small part of the sandbox (meaning good players will still be good, and not good players will still be not good), allowing people to play the style they want to play and experience the parts of the sandbox they like on a more frequent basis.

We consider Specializations end-game content because even if you have “access” to all of them on day one, you will still need to reach level 50 before you can enlist in any Specializations. Think of them as giving you control over extending your level cap.

Two Specializations – Wetwork and Pioneer – will be available to all players when the game launches, and the rest will gradually be made available in the months following launch. We will be keeping a close watch on player participation post-launch and will roll out the additional six Specializations when the player base reaches certain milestones. There will also be playlists available that do not utilize loadouts or armor mods.

Halo 4 features the following Specializations:

Wetwork
Wetwork Halo 4 Specialization

Wetwork Specialization: Spartan optimization for stealth operations which focus on the elimination of an enemy target with the goal of leaving no tactical footprint behind.

Stealth Armor Mod: The Stealth armor allows users to move quickly and silently in combat, executing enemy assassinations with lightning fast dexterity.

The Stealth armor mod – which has very sharp shapes and angles, reminiscent of a knife or blade – does a number of things to help a player that likes to get up close and personal. It adds sound dampening when sprinting, animations are performed faster (to minimize the time you’re vulnerable), and it has a minor effect on Promethean Vision. Typically, when Promethean Vision is activated, people appear red. When you use Stealth, though, only your outline appears red. Many times when someone is using Promethean Vision, they scan quickly so if there’s a lot going on, they may miss you. Or you can hope, anyway.

Wetwork gold visor, Wetwork blue/orange visor, Wetwork armor set, Wetwork armor set variant, DMR Weapon Skin

Pioneer
Pioneer Halo 4 Specialization

Pioneer Specialization: Spartan optimization for deployment into uncharted, hostile territory (such as uncolonized worlds or Forerunner constructs like Requiem) for the purpose of gathering/relaying information.

Fast Track Armor Mod: The Fast Track armor mod allows Spartans to gain more experiential data from each encounter, effectively ranking up quicker during the process.

The Fast Track armor mod features armor that has wiring which runs throughout the armor to control temperatures in extreme conditions. Gameplay-wise, it gives the player more post-game experience. In-game, if you get 10 points per kill, you don’t get more at that exact moment, but after the game it modifies the amount of experience your Spartan earns to increase the speed at which you rank up. It’s not for everybody because it takes up a primary spot (that could be used for something like carrying an extra grenade or sprinting longer). And, in case you were wondering, you can’t change to it at the end of a game and get more experience for the entire match. Yes, we’re on to you...

Pioneer gold visor, Pioneer silver/blue visor, Pioneer armor set, Pioneer armor set variant, Plasma Pistol Weapon Skin

Engineer
Engineer Halo 4 Specialization

Engineer Specialization: Spartan optimization for the subversion, repair and reconstitution of a wide range of technology, including Covenant and Forerunner complex networks.

Drop Recon Armor Mod: Armor mod allows users to predict the location and time of an Ordnance Drop through an external suborbital monitoring system.

The Drop Recon armor mod – the helmet of which has four socket connections for add-ons, depending on the task – lets you know that Infinity Ordnance is coming and what the Infinity Ordnance is. You see the waypoint and type of weapon that is coming down prior to the weapon entering the game (the specific time is still being fine-tuned). Organized teams will find this armor mod useful because, with communication, there is the likelihood you can beat everybody to the weapon spawns your team finds most desirable.

Engineer gold visor, Engineer pink/purple/blue visor, Engineer armor set, Engineer armor set variant, Suppressor Weapon Skin

Tracker
Tracker Halo 4 Specialization

Tracker Specialization: Spartan optimization for long-range target tracking (trans-continent and off-world), particularly in scenarios where conventional tracking has failed or such a substantial time has passed that the trail has gone cold.

Requisition Armor Mod: The Requisition armor mod allows users the ability to recall their own ordnance requests in order to acquire more helpful weapons in the field.

The Requisition armor mod – the helmet of which has a scanning device on the front of the visor – allows you to choose a new set of personal ordnance when personal ordnance is granted. When the menu for a personal ordnance appears on your screen, hitting left, down, or right on the D-pad selects the relevant option. When you have Requisition and hit “up”, you receive a new random selection of choices. This armor mod doesn’t have knowledge of what ordnance had previously, so while you’re not guaranteed better choices, you’re more likely to get the weapon you’re good with or your favorite power-up, if you didn’t get it the first time around.

Rogue
Rogue Halo 4 Specialization

Rogue Specialization: Spartan optimization for single-operative missions which require a lone Spartan to be deployed on their own for incredibly long durations of time, even years if required.

Stability Armor Mod: The Stability armor mod allows users to increase their aiming stability when being fired upon.

The Stability armor mod – which features several sharp fin elements and sharp angles – makes you flinch less when you’re zoomed in and getting hit. It will be valuable to players that prefer using precision weapons and often find themselves engaged in long-range battles. If two similarly skilled players, both with DMRs and using scopes go head-to-head, the person using Stability has a small advantage. Skill and steady hands will still win the day but Stability allows you to keep your aim on target when facing multiple bullet strikes. Similarly, the player with DMR and Stability will have a larger advantage over a player with AR at long range. But (and yes, there’s always a “but”) the player they're fighting may have made a choice for a different mod in that slot, which may come into play with an additional grenade or something else. Victory is never guaranteed…

Stalker
Stalker Halo 4 Specialization

Stalker Specialization: Spartan optimization for target shadowing missions which require tactical invisibility despite operating at an extremely close range to the target itself.

Nemesis Armor Mod: The Nemesis armor mod allows users to target and track down previous attacking enemies, highlighting them on the armor’s passive sensors.

Nemesis armor – which features lines that are both strong and stealthy – gives you an icon on your HUD of the last person that killed you. While some people utilize it to get revenge, others use it to avoid that person (for obvious reasons). It’s also useful when playing defense for seeing where an offensive player is going. On maps with limited visibility, Nemesis can provide a short window of intelligence in the movement of enemy players or teams, allowing a respawning team to react and steal a match. In play testing, we’ve seen players trusting the extra information implicitly and falling for feints or being target fixated with the extra information and being lured into unfavorable situations. As with everything in Halo, this upgrade allows you to tailor your play to your style but remember that the enemy team is aware of the ability and will be countering and often using it or another option to tip the scales back in their favor.

Pathfinder
Pathfinder Halo 4 Specialization

Pathfinder Specialization: Spartan optimization for deep, unconventional deployment within unknown enemy territory and with little to no assistance from command.

Gunner Armor Mod: The Gunner armor mod decreases the time of weapon overheat when occupying a vehicle weapon position and increases Spartan speed while carrying a detached turret.

The Gunner armor mod – which was designed to explore alien worlds – has two major functions: One, when you’re on a mounted anti-infantry gun (Warthog and the secondaries of Wraith, Scorpion, etc.), the guns overheat less quickly, allowing you to fire longer at the maximum rate of fire. And two, when you pull the gun off an emplaced mount, you move faster, allowing you to use those guns more effectively offensively instead of just defensively. You still won’t be able to use Armor Abilities or Sprint, but you can move faster, bringing some heavy firepower to any offensive attack.

Operator
Operator Halo 4 Specialization

Operator Specialization: Spartan optimization for the operation and control of a wide-range of vehicles; space, air, ground, and sea.

Wheelman Armor Mod: The Wheelman armor mod gives Spartans the skill to coax every bit of stamina and durability out of vehicles they are piloting.

Wheelman armor – which features cylinder packs that could be preplaced with more oxygen or cooling material depending on the mission – makes you suffer the negative effects of an overcharged Plasma Pistol burst for less than the normal time. Vehicles you drive are also more durable over a longer period of time. You can still get hijacked, but the window for that is smaller.

Some players will select their Specialization based on weakness, trying to make up for a skill-based deficiency. Others will select their Specialization based on strength, hoping to turn close games into more solid victories. Whichever path you choose to take, you should make a meaningful decision for your play style, no matter what decisions others are making because, as you’ll find out in a mere three months, it’s all fun and games. Until your buddy takes your personal ordnance, that is…

Things to do Until November 6

Halo 4 launches on November 6.  The Cold Stream DLC is keeping us amused on clan nights for the time being.  Need more to do?  Here's some other games that the clan and I are playing:

Guild Wars 2: MMORPG with a PC client. This is the latest MMO in the vein of World of Warcraft.  Intends to reduce the "grind" of RPGs and introduces interesting things like Dynamic Events.  Cost: $59.99.  Players on:

  • gtdroptop.9543 on darkhaven
  • dgarnett TBD
Starcraft II: RTS with both PC and Mac clients.  This is the big boy version of Halo Wars, the standard by which all other RTSes are measured.  It's an older game, so it's cheaper to get.  Cost: $39.99.  Players on:
  • gtdroptop#1499
Battle Nations: iOS game supported on iPhone, iPad and Mac.  Build and harvest Farmville-like game that most of the clan is playing.  Cost: Free!  Players on:
  • Alchemist8888
  • beer4porter
  • carriemae
  • darknorpo
  • dgarnett
  • fishbone10
  • gtdroptop
  • Julianne2
  • meanmrmonkey
  • MeanMrsMonkey
  • omniscientDeath
  • unsavory
Left 4 Dead 2 Cold Stream DLC: Xbox 360 Game with XBL support.  You get two brand new maps as well as 3 L4D1 maps. You get to play all 5 maps with our favorite characters from L4D1 (Francis, Zoey, Porter and creepy old Bill!) but with all the cool special infected of L4D2! Cold Stream will be the default clan night game through September.  Cost: $8.  Players on:
  • beer4porter
  • darknorpo
  • gtdroptop
  • MEAN MR MONKEY

Clan night tonight. 9pm PT. L4D2 Cold Stream.

Reminder that your homework assignment for the month of September is to play H2 campaign.  There's no XBL support for this at all, not even voice chat, so it will be an individual thing.

Also remember that your homework for the month of August is to play the Halo 1/CE campaign.

No clan night this week.

I'm in Maui this week, so will not be hosting formal clan night. For those looking to game, at least 4 of us have purchased the L4D2 Cold Stream map pack DLC. For $8, you get two brand new maps as well as 3 L4D1 maps. You get to play all 5 maps with our favorite characters from L4D1 (Francis, Zoey, Porter and creepy old Bill!) but with all the cool special infected of L4D2! Cold Stream will be the default clan night game through September.

For those that can't kick in the coin, August is set aside for Halo 1/CE campaign, since we just finished the Halo Reach campaign in July. September will be Halo 2, October will be Halo 3, with November set for the launch of Halo 4. Since XBL doesn't support Halo 1/CE/2 campaign very well, this is just a homework assignment until October. For those interested in coordinating 2-player Halo 1/CE campaign runs, I'm happy to help with matchmaking.

Movie: Act of Valor

For those of you that are fans of the modern day, realistic squad-based shooters (CoD MW, GRAW, RB6), I recommend Act of Valor.  It's available for rent from Netflix and stars active-duty Navy SEALs.  I found it entertaining, and basically a movie version of the games.  Good times.

Won't be a clan night this week, I'll be out.

Battle Nations - PvP Part 2

I previously posted about the free rewards you can get in PvP.  Even though you get VP when you lose, it can be frustrating at first if you always lose.  One way to improve your odds of winning, is to have the best and strongest units available at your level.  PvP matchmaking always restricts you to opponents of your own level, so you are (in general) guaranteed that nobody has access to better units than you do.  Here are my recommended loadouts by level:

Levels 1-3: Troopers are the only units available.  Doesn't really matter how you line them up, but it's good practice to spread them out.  You will only be facing other Troopers, except for the odd person that's spending nanopods on Shock Troops.  Strategically speaking, remember that it takes two shots from a Trooper to kill another Trooper and that each Trooper requires 1 turn to reload.  That means you should choose your targets to time your kills most effectively.  This is especially important when it comes down to 3 or fewer opponent targets.  It's a good idea to put one shot into each opposing unit, and then choose your kills to minimize the damage your opponent can do to you.  For example, with 2 opponent Troopers left and one shot each on them, kill the Trooper that didn't shoot at you last.  The one that shot at you has to reload on the next turn so isn't a threat.  You'll be able to kill both Troopers without taking any damage.

Levels 4-6: Use three Grenadiers in your first row.  It takes 3 shots from a Trooper to kill them, so they make good meat shields.  I find Mortars to be useless.

Levels 7-11: Use three Hunters in your first row.  Like Grenadiers, it takes 3 shots from a Trooper to kill them.  Unlike Grenadiers, they are very effective against other infantry like Troopers, Grenadiers and Hunters.  I find Gunners to be useless given their restricted targeting range.  Most players space their troops out, which greatly reduces the damage that Gunners can inflict.  Dragoons are special units that nobody uses consistently.

Levels 12-17: Use Riot Troopers in your first row.  Have at least 2 Grenadiers in your second row to deal with opposing Riot Troopers.  Use a Hunter or Trooper in the second row, and a single Trooper in the third row.  Having a Trooper in the third row is especially useful as many of these PvP battles result in one player running out of ammo.  Troopers are nice in that they have infinite ammo.

** Special note: Depending on how you progress through the campaign, you will unlock Sharp Shooters after you complete "A Terrible Boar - Part 5".  Sharp Shooters are the strongest units early on and provide a significant competitive advantage.  It is worth putting other things on  hold to complete the Boar missions and unlock Sharp Shooters.  Once you have them, replace the Hunters and Troopers above with Sharp Shooters.

With the new levels released, almost everybody has a Battle Raptor now.  These wreck shop and are good to have in your second row.  If you have Riot Troopers available, but run out of good units to go behind them, use a Battle Raptor and your Recon for one match.

Levels 18-23: Use Riot Troopers in your first row, Mini-Tanks in your second row, and Sharp Shooters in your third row.  Mini-Tanks are the best anti-Riot and anti-Tank units for a long time.  Build lots.

Levels 24-28: Use Riot Troopers in your first row, Mini-Tanks in your second row, and Snipers in your third row.  Snipers wreck shop.  Once you hit level 24, stop everything that you're doing and stockpile Snipers.  Find a friend who has Spec Ops that will let you occupy it.  It takes 40 Bars to build Spec Ops, and 5 Bars each per Sniper.  You need 4 snipers at a minimum.  10 is a good number.  You can't have too many.

Level 29: Use Tank Killers in your first row, Lt Tanks in your second row, and Snipers in your third row.  You can also substitute Gun Trucks or Bazookas for Tank Killers in your front row.  Most players will have one-shot armor killers in their loadouts here, so everything in your front row is sacrificial.  Snipers are decent at taking out the armor killers and don't deflect as often as Tank rounds.  Prioritize the opponent units that can do heavy damage to you.  Snipers will kill Gun Trucks in one shot, and can kill Bazookas with one critical shot.  Remember that Gun Trucks and Tank Killers only have one ammo, and Bazookas only have two.  Once they've spent their ammo, they can be ignored, as they are no longer a threat.

Level 30+: I'm not there yet.  But by now, you should have figured this out yourself.

Still no clan night
