Strikes

Weeklies and Nightfall can only be done once per character per week.  Weekly rewards nest, so if you do the 32 weekly first you get 9 coins.  But if you do the 26 weekly at 3 coins, you will then only get 6 coins for doing the 32 in the same week on the same character.  The other Vanguard playlist strikes can be done as many times as you like each week, with the only limitation of weekly (100) and total Vanguard marks (200).

Armor

Armor light levels determine your character's level.  4 pieces of 30 light armor gets you to level 30.  4 pieces of level 42 armor gets you to 34.  Mixing and maxing will have you fill somewhere in the middle.  Right now, 21 total Radiant Shards per armor are probably the most difficult material to obtain.  Fastest way to max level 34 is through 1 ascended Exotic, 1 armor core from the level 32 Prison of Elders challenge, and most likely 2 ascended Legendary pieces.
