Halo CEA Reviewed
So we've had a couple of days to play with Halo Combat Evolved: Anniversary edition. It does appear that you need to download the classic Halo 1 multi-player maps by using the code included in your game. Some thoughts:
Campaign: It's sad that this is 2 player only, but it's still a pretty fun campaign with great music. It's gorgeous compared to Halo 1, but I wouldn't say that it's quite "current gen." Hitting the Back button is neat to see the original graphics. The Grunt Funeral skull is a game changer, it basically makes killing Elites trivially easy. Headshot one grunt in the squad, and everyone goes boom. Also makes it dangerous to melee grunts now.
Firefight: This is satisfyingly fun to play on the Halo 1 campaign maps, and a nice alternative to campaign. It basically gives you a way to play snippets of the campaign as 4 player co-op, on XBL, with Challenges available.
Multiplayer: This is launched from the Halo CEA disc, but takes you into the Reach matchmaking engine. The game types and maps prefaced by "Anniversary" are the classic game types and maps. Beaver Creek was the most familiar, but Damnation and Prisoner showed up several times as well. Here are averaged clan stats from clan night, some things never change:

Weekly Challenge: This Is How We Do It
This week, Bungie is offering 10,000 cR for finishing 9 Campaign levels on Heroic. If you haven't finished the Campaign yet, 9 levels is exactly how many it takes to play the whole game through, so this week would be a good time to do so. If you've been paying attention to the blog, you'll already know the easiest way to get this done. I finished in about 30 minutes.

Iron With Friends
Today features another "Iron With Friends" challenging you to finish a campaign mission on co-op with the Iron skull turned on. I just discovered that you can actually do this yourself in split-screen with a guest on the second controller. If you sprint through Winter Contingency, the guest will just teleport forward as you make progress so you never have to touch the second controller. The only place you have to move player 2 is after the Falcon drops you off by the blast doors, where you'll have to move player 2 out of fire. I moved both players to the stairs, and then moved one at a time into the blast door area. For those who can't figure this out, I'll likely be on at 11pm tonight to work on the multiplayer challenges.

Reach Challenges: Campaign Scoring
Sometimes there are challenges like Points Pyramid (score xx,000 points) that require you to turn on a bunch of skulls and try to rack up a high score in Campaign. The skulls do things like limit ammo, increase AI dodging of grenades, turn off the HUD, turn off radar, upgrade enemies, etc. The more skulls generally, the harder it is. But it's something you have to do in order to get a high enough score. The key here is that the flying levels are largely unaffected by skulls because you have infinite ammo and Banshees/Phantoms/Seraphs are mostly unaffected by skull upgrades.
- Long Night of Solace - Rally Point Alpha: This is my preferred level for picking up Campaign scoring challenges. Alpha checkpoint will put you in the Sabre. I play on Legendary, with all skulls on except for Iron, which gives you a score multiplier of around 15x. You can actually play with Iron as well since I don't die in the time it takes to get the challenge, but just in case you do die, this save you from having to restart. I picked up the 40k challenge in 7 minutes. Note that on-line it only shows 32,100 kills since I think you lose your time multiplier if you quit out of the level early, but the challenge still pops and sticks even if your final score ends up below the target.
- New Alexandria: Same thing as above, turn on a bunch of skulls since you'll be in the Falcon and shooting down Banshees. Concentrate on Banshees only and ignore the Phantoms, that way you won't get swarmed. See where OD picked up the 40k challenge in 9 minutes.

Reach Challenges: Finishing Campaign Levels
There are lots of campaign challenges that simply require you to finish a level with some specific conditions. Challenges like Foggy Notion (Heroic, Cloud, Famine), Like a Glove (Heroic, Catch), Flawless Cowboy (Heroic, No Deaths) sound a lot harder than they actually are. Most of the time, you don't really have to "play" the level at all and can be done in about 5 minutes.
Nightfall has a path and a glitch that allows you to sprint through and finish the entire level in 5 minutes. You can have as many skulls as you like since you won't really run into any resistance. See here for a real example from my game history. Winter Contingency also has a path that allows you to sprint through and finish the entire level in under 15 minutes. No glitch required here, but takes a little longer because of the unskippable cutscenes. See game history example here. For most of the challenges, I prefer the Nightfall run because it's faster. Sometimes the Winter Contingency run is more appropriate though, especially if you have to not die for the challenge. On occasion, the Forklift Glitch takes more than one try and you can get killed trying.
- Forklift Glitch: This is one of the coolest things we've seen in Reach so far. Shows how to sprint through Nightfall and exploit the Forklift Glitch to avoid almost all the enemies on the map.
- Winter Sprint: Shows the path to sprint through on Winter Contingency with very little risk of dying. At the end, I recommend a green gun combo on the Sword elite, it's a little safer and more reliable. With *some* skull combos, it may take two green gun blasts, or a green gun + a sticky grenade to take out his shields.
- Flawless Finish Glitch: Shows the save point at the end of Winter Contingency that allows you to finish it over and over again flawlessly with no effort. Is not a Bungie bannable offense.

A Monument to All Your Sins
One of the most difficult (or tedious) achievements to get in Halo Reach is "A Monument to All Your Sins," awarded for finishing the entire campaign on Legendary, solo. Congratulations to Octurian Poon and CoolerSopranos2 for accomplishing this impressive feat!
See the chart for some comparison of Campaign data, click for huge. Winter Contingency continues to be the easiest level, and The Pillar of Autumn continues to be the hardest. Interestingly, on Solo, Long Night of Solace has bubbled up to be the second hardest level of them all, but also the highest scoring. If you notify when you finish Legendary Solo, I'll be happy to compile your stats as well.

Campaign by the Numbers
So I've now finished the campaign on Normal Co-op (4 players), Legendary Co-op (2-4 players) and Legendary Solo. Here's some tidbits that the data suggests:
- Level 2 "Winter Contingency" (this is first "real" level, level 1 is just cutscenes), as would be expected, is the easiest campaign level. It has the fewest enemies, takes the shortest time to finish, and is the easiest to survive without dying. Would be a good level to work on the Campaign commendations, especially "Flawless Cowboy."
- Level 10 [Title redacted for spoilers] is overall the hardest campaign level. I won't say much more here to avoid spoilers in case anybody hasn't played it yet.
- The game does not appear to adjust anything for co-op play. Enemies, weapons, ammo, available points are all essentially the same whether you are playing solo or co-op.
- Pro: This means there are fewer enemies each player needs to kill in co-op.
- Pro: Co-op brings with it significant advantages in that you can respawn in place when you die instead of returning to a check-point.
- Con: Because the game also does not generate more ammo and vehicles for co-op, so that can be a restriction on occasion.
- Con: The total number of points stays the same, so you will generate score more points per person playing on solo.
- Level 5 "Tip of the Spear" has the best opportunity to generate kills on co-op. On my two co-op playthroughs (Normal and Legendary), this level ranked #1 in kills per minute.
- Level 10 had the highest rank in points per minute per person on co-op. On Legendary Solo, Level 8 had the highest rank in points per minute.
- Level 4 "Night Fall" and Level 10 both start out with good opportunities to work on the "If They Came to Hear Me Beg" achievement. I got it on level 4, OD got it on level 10.

Pro Tip: Get a New Bird
On the eighth campaign mission, New Alexandria, you can effectively request a new Falcon at any time. If your plane has gotten shot up and is smoking, just set it down on any roof top or balcony and get out. You will see a prompt that says "Call for emergency evac." Hit down on your D-pad, and Kat will send up a brand new Falcon with two new gunners and you can continue right where you left off.

Clan night tonight. 9pm PT. Halo 3.
Exactly one week to Reach. We have a full team signed up for a midnight campaign run: gtdroptop, OmniscientDeath, TimMAY 1023, Fishbone10. If there are others who want to commit to a 7 hour campaign run at midnight, have pre-ordered their game at a retailer open at midnight, and are looking for friends, I'm happy to help coordinate.

Who to Choose?
Noble 3 has the long gun, Noble 4 has the sweet helmet, Noble 5 has the chaingun, and Noble 6 is Hyper-Lethal. I can't decide.

ODST Update
For those that haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet, buy.com just dropped their price on Halo 3: ODST to $53.99 with free shipping.
A tip for all your working your way through the Campaign: The campaign missions do not have linear memory. What I mean by that is that if you go back and replay a mission somewhere in the beginning or middle of the game, you will LOSE ALL OF YOUR PROGRESS when you return to the mission you left off on. There are six sub-story lines to check off in your objectives. If you go back to replay a mission earlier than your current progress, it will clear your progress on all of those sub-story lines and you will have to do them over again. The final mission will not be available until all six are checked off at the same time.
Solo and co-op campaign progress is tracked separately, so you can replay solo missions without clearing your co-op progress.

ODST Firefight Tips
36 hours after launch, I now have a better feel for Firefight and can provide some tips and tricks. First and foremost is how the mode is structured. The game sends enemies in groups: 5 waves per round, 3 rounds per set, and as many sets as you can survive. The picture on the left shows how the HUD displays your progress. Note that the game will go on forever until you spend all your lives...which is a LONG time on Easy. For some reason, we had a game on Crater end after 3 sets, but that may been a network glitch.
- There are achievements on each level for reaching 200,000 points, so that may be motivation to keep playing that far
- The bonus round after each set lasts 60 seconds, consists only of grunts with all skulls on, deaths do not count against your score, and lives are awarded every 2000 points. One death by anybody ends the round early.
- Some enemies do not have to be killed to finish a round. So far, snipers and Wraiths fall into this category. It's a good idea to take care of them anyway because they're really annoying, but not required to make progress.
- Brute Chieftains (gold with hammer): Bait them into charging you in close quarters, sidestep the charge, and hit them on the back of the head.
- All other Brutes: Hit them with an overcharged plasma blast, followed by a headshot. If you don't have a plasma pistol, you need to get their armor off to expose their head to kill them efficiently.
- Hunters: Hit them with bullets in the orange fleshy area on their back. Punching is ineffective.
- Grunts: All can be killed with single headshots. Most can be killed with a single melee unless the harder skulls are on.
- Jackals: Shoot through the notch in their shield to stun them, and then finish with a single headshot.
- Drones: A mounted chaingun that is protected in the back by teammates is the most cost effective way to deal with drones. Otherwise they suck up all your ammo for poor return in points and health.
- Wraith: Beware the Brute in the turret. One way to kill a Wraith is with an overcharged plasma shot and then boarding to kill with a grenade. An alternative is to hit the weak spot on the very back of the tank.

Clan night tonight. 8pm PT. H3: ODST
FishBone10 and Beer4Porter helped me to break in H3: ODST's new Firefight mode right after the midnight launch. And it is FUN! Even though I scored over half of our team's points, I do have to recommend their generous assistance in my "Invincible" medal (kill 100 enemies without dying). Some housekeeping items:
- Insert your Campaign disc for Campaign, Firefight, and to customize your character for ODST
- Under Settings/Appearance, change your EMBLEM to your H3 number.
- In the same area, change your SERVICE TAG to something related to your gamertag.
Below are the assigned emblems (carried from H3) and some recommended service tags. Your service tag is what people see above your head as you run around the map. Since we have 4 characters to work with now, you should pick something that will quickly remind people of your gamertag and who you are.
- gtdroptop: " GT ", 0
- BeerMonkeee: "BMNK", 1
- TimMAY 1023: "TIMA", 2
- CoolerSopranos2: "CULR", 3
- OmniscientDeath: "OMNI", 4
- FragginURdoodz: "DOOD", 5
- FishBone10: "FISH", 5
- Beer4Porter: "PORT", 6
- Masher24: "MASH", 7
- Spix: "SPIX", 7
- BeefierBen: "BEEF", 8
- MEAN MR MONKEY: "MR M", 8
- Mean Mrs Monkey: "MRSM", 7
- darknorpo: "NORP", 9
- Dawill0: "WILO", 5
- Octurian Poon: "POON", 7
